Why Your Café Needs More Than Just an Instagram Page

Instagram is great for discovery, but it's a terrible substitute for a real website. Here's why — and what to do instead.

A lot of café owners tell us the same thing: "We get most of our customers through Instagram, so we don't really need a website."

We get it. Instagram is free, visual, and your customers are already on it. But relying on it as your only online presence is a real risk — and it's leaving money on the table.

Instagram can disappear overnight

Your account can be hacked, restricted, or shadowbanned with no warning and no recourse. If your only online presence is a social media account you don't own, your entire digital reputation can vanish. A website is yours.

Google doesn't index Instagram well

When someone searches "café near me" or "best flat white [your suburb]", Google isn't showing them Instagram posts. It's showing websites. If you don't have one, you're invisible to anyone who finds their next café through Google — which is most people.

Menus need to be findable and readable

Instagram is great for food photos, but it's terrible for showing a full menu in a readable format. Customers want to know prices, dietary options, and what's on before they drive there. A simple menu page on your website solves this.

You can't capture emails or run promotions without a website

An email list of your regulars is one of the most valuable things a café can build. You can't do that through Instagram. A simple "join our newsletter for weekly specials" on your website, backed by a tool like Mailchimp, builds an audience you actually own.

What a café website actually needs

You don't need anything complicated. A great café website has:

  • A homepage with your vibe, hours, and location
  • A clean, easy-to-read menu page
  • A photo gallery (pull from Instagram if you like)
  • An online order or reservation link
  • Google Maps embed

That's it. It doesn't need to be fancy — it just needs to exist and be easy to use.

Think of Instagram as the shopfront window. Your website is the door people walk through.
